Albino Tiger Oscar - Astronotus ocellatus
The Albino Tiger Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a stunning variant of the popular Tiger Oscar, characterized by its pale white or cream-colored body with striking orange-red markings. Lacking dark pigmentation, this albino variation retains the bold patterns of the standard Tiger Oscar while showcasing a more vibrant contrast.
Native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of South America, Astronotus ocellatus is an intelligent and interactive cichlid known for its strong personality and ability to recognize its owner. These fish grow quite large, often reaching up to 12–14 inches (30–35 cm), and require a spacious aquarium with robust filtration. While generally territorial and aggressive toward smaller fish, they can coexist with similarly sized tankmates.
Feeding
Albino Tiger Oscars are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet. Offer high-quality cichlid pellets or sticks as their primary food. Supplement with live or frozen options like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small feeder fish for additional protein. Occasionally, include fruits or blanched vegetables such as zucchini to round out their diet. Feeding them a variety of foods ensures vibrant colours, good health, and active behaviour.
Tank Mates
These Oscars are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially as they mature. Suitable tank mates include other large, non-aggressive fish such as Silver Dollars, Plecos, and Severums. Avoid smaller fish, as Oscars may see them as food. Providing ample space and multiple hiding spots helps minimise stress and maintain harmony. When paired with the right companions, they create a dynamic and engaging tank environment.
