Blue King Tetra ( Cochu’s Blue Neon ) - Boehlkea fredcochui
The Blue King Tetra (*Pseudotetra sp.*) is a striking freshwater fish, reaching 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) in length, with a vivid blue body and metallic sheen. It is peaceful, social, and thrives in schools of at least six in well-planted tanks with slightly acidic to neutral water. Active swimmers, they enjoy a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods. While breeding can be challenging, these tetras add vibrant color and lively behavior to community aquariums.
Caring
Cochu’s Blue Tetras thrive in tanks of at least 60 liters, offering plenty of open swimming areas and planted regions for cover. Maintain water temperatures between 22°C and 28°C, with a pH range of 6.0–7.5. Using a dark substrate and subdued lighting enhances their vivid blue tones. Regular water changes and efficient filtration help keep their environment healthy and stable.
Ideal Tank Mates
These tetras are peaceful and ideal for community tanks with other non-aggressive species like Ember Tetras, Corydoras, and Rasboras. They should be kept in groups of six or more to encourage schooling behaviour and reduce stress. Avoid housing them with long-finned fish, as Cochu’s Blue Tetras may occasionally nip fins.
Feeding
As omnivores, Cochu’s Blue Tetras require a varied diet. Provide high-quality flakes or micro-pellets as their staple food, supplemented with live or frozen options like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Adding occasional blanched vegetables, such as zucchini or spinach, helps ensure balanced nutrition and enhances their vibrant colours.
