Hemiancistrus sp. L128, often referred to as the Blue Phantom Pleco, is a large species that can exceed 25 cm in length. Due to its size, it requires ample space within the aquarium environment.
The base coloration of this pleco is an olive green-gray with a subtle blue tint. Its entire body is adorned with bright white, yellow, or light blue spots, creating a striking and vibrant look. Both males and females develop yellowish odontodes on their gill covers and pectoral fins, while males may occasionally display small odontode growths near the dorsal fin.
This species may exhibit aggression toward conspecifics, particularly between males. Beyond this, it generally displays a peaceful temperament toward most other fish.
Hemiancistrus sp. L128 should not be mistaken for Hemiancistrus subviridis L200, despite both occupying the same environment. Additionally, it is often confused with Hemiancistrus sp. L467 or Baryancistrus demantoides L200 Hi Fin due to similar appearances.
Distribution and habitat
This pleco inhabits the warm, oxygen-rich waters of the Rio Orinoco basin, including areas around Puerto Ayacucho and Puerto Carreno, located on the Venezuela-Colombia border. The water temperature in this region can rise to 32° C, with a slightly acidic pH and low mineral content.
Diet
The Hemiancistrus sp. L128 is an omnivore that consumes both plant-based foods and animal proteins. In the wild, its primary diet includes crustaceans and insect larvae, alongside various types of algae.
In captivity, this species accepts a wide range of processed and frozen foods. When in good health and condition, it is generally not selective about its diet. Fresh vegetables such as zucchini and sweet potato can also be offered as part of its nutrition.
