The Bumblebee Goby (Brachygobius spp.) is a small yet eye-catching freshwater and brackish water fish known for its striking black and yellow banded pattern, resembling a bumblebee. Growing to about 1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.8 cm) in length, these tiny fish have a curious and somewhat territorial nature, often interacting with their environment and tankmates in entertaining ways.

Native to the slow-moving rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters of Southeast Asia, Brachygobius species thrive in slightly brackish conditions, though some can adapt to freshwater. They prefer tanks with plenty of hiding spots, such as driftwood and caves, and do best in groups to minimize aggression. Due to their specialized diet, which includes live and frozen foods, and their sensitivity to water conditions, Bumblebee Gobies are recommended for aquarists with some experience in maintaining brackish or specialized freshwater tanks.

Bumblebee Goby Tank Mates?

Gobies do best with peaceful, similarly sized tank mates. Suitable companions include small fish like Ember Tetras, Celestial Pearl Danios, and peaceful shrimp species. Avoid aggressive or fast-swimming fish that may outcompete them for food or stress them. A species-only tank is another excellent option to showcase their unique behaviour and vibrant colours.

Are Bumblebee Gobies Aggressive?

While generally peaceful, Bumblebee Goby can display territorial behaviour, especially toward their own kind. To minimize aggression, provide a well-decorated tank with plenty of hiding spots such as rocks, driftwood, and plants. Keeping them in groups of five or more helps distribute territorial disputes, creating a more harmonious environment.

Tank Requirements

The Gobies thrive in tanks of at least 40 liters with stable water temperatures between 24°C and 28°C and a pH of 7.0–8.0. Although they naturally prefer brackish conditions with some salt, our stock is acclimated to freshwater. Live plants, sand substrate, and gentle filtration mimic their natural habitat and encourage natural behaviours.

Feeding

These gobies are carnivorous and prefer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They may ignore standard flakes or pellets, so it’s crucial to provide a diet they’ll readily accept. Feeding them small portions multiple times a day ensures they stay healthy and active. A varied diet supports their vibrant colouring and overall vitality.
