Barbodes semifasciolatus, the Chinese barb, is a species of cyprinid fish native to the Red River basin in southeast Asia where they occur in fresh waters at depths of 5 metres or less. The captive variant popularly known as the gold barb or Schuberti barb is an extremely popular aquarium fish.

Size and Lifespan

These barbs grow to about 8 cm. With proper care, they live 4–6 years. Therefore, maintain clean water and a balanced diet to ensure longevity. Additionally, keeping them in groups of six or more promotes natural schooling behavior, boosting their health and vibrancy.

Ideal Tank Setup

A 60-litre tank is ideal for Golden Barbs, with dense plants and open swimming areas. Moderate water flow and efficient filtration are essential. Furthermore, keep pH between 6.5–7.0 and temperature at 26–28°C. To replicate their natural habitat:

  • Add plants like Java Fern or Anubias for cover.
  • Include driftwood or rocks for structure.
  • Ensure stable water parameters with weekly changes.

Compatible Tank Mates

These lively barbs thrive in groups, adding dynamic energy to tanks. They pair well with fast-moving, peaceful species. However, avoid slow or long-finned fish to prevent nipping. Suitable tank mates include:

  • Neon Tetras
  • Zebra Danios
  • Kuhli Loaches
  • White Cloud Mountain Minnows

Diet and Feeding

Golden Barbs enjoy a varied omnivorous diet. Offer high-quality flakes or pellets daily. Additionally, provide live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Supplement with blanched vegetables for optimal health. Consequently, feed small amounts twice daily to maintain their vibrant gold coloration and energy.

Breeding and Behaviour of Golden Barb

Breeding these barbs is straightforward in a separate tank. Males show brighter colors, while females are rounder. Provide fine-leaved plants for egg-laying. After spawning, remove adults to protect eggs. Fry hatch in 24–36 hours, feeding on infusoria initially. Moreover, their active schooling behavior adds lively charm to community tanks.
