Butterfly Pleco Catfish L168 transforms aquariums with its vibrant, mood-changing patterns. Native to Brazil’s Rio Araguaya, this nocturnal fish excels at algae control. Moreover, its compact size and hardy nature suit most tanks. Therefore, aquarists love it for its beauty and cleaning prowess.

Size and Lifespan

Butterfly Plecos grow to 10cm, perfect for medium tanks. With proper care, they live 8–12 years. Consequently, their manageable size and longevity make them a stunning, long-term addition.

Ideal Tank Setup

To keep Butterfly Plecos thriving, use a 100-litre tank with strong filtration. Additionally, provide hiding spots for their nocturnal habits. To replicate its natural habitat:

  • Maintain pH 6.5–7.5 and temperature 24°C–29°C.
  • Add driftwood and rocks for grazing.
  • Include caves for daytime hiding.
  • Use a fine substrate to mimic riverbeds.

Compatible Tank Mates

These peaceful plecos coexist well with non-aggressive fish. However, avoid overcrowding to prevent stress. Thus, select tank mates carefully. Suitable tank mates include:

  • Neon tetras
  • Guppies
  • Corydoras catfish
  • Rasboras

Feeding

Butterfly Plecos devour algae eagerly. Supplement their diet with algae wafers and sinking pellets. Additionally, offer vegetables like zucchini or spinach. As a result, balanced feeding ensures vibrant health.

Breeding and Behaviour

These nocturnal fish hide during the day but become active at night. Males guard eggs in caves, showing protective instincts. Therefore, provide hiding spots to encourage breeding. Their unique behaviour captivates aquarists.
