The Orange Peckoltia Pleco Catfish, scientifically known as Hypancistrus sp. (L387), is a stunning freshwater fish native to the Rio Araguaya in the Amazon system, Brazil. Its light yellow-tan body with bold black markings creates a striking display in nano or planted aquariums. Moreover, this peaceful bottom-dweller is a hardy addition, making it an ideal choice for aquarists seeking a compact, colourful fish. Sourcing from captive-bred stocks is recommended due to its popularity in the aquarium trade.

Caring

A tank of at least 80 litres suits the Orange Peckoltia Pleco Catfish, featuring a sand or fine gravel substrate, rocks, and driftwood caves to mimic its fast-flowing river habitat. For instance, maintain water conditions with a pH of 6.5–7.5, a temperature of 25–29°C, and moderate water flow. Additionally, low to medium lighting and a secure lid are essential, as these nocturnal fish may move actively. Weekly 20–30% water changes and a strong filtration system ensure optimal water quality.

Ideal Tank Mates

This species thrives in community tanks with peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, or Corydoras catfish. However, avoid housing with other Hypancistrus species to prevent hybridisation or aggressive fish like large cichlids. Males may be territorial with other males, so provide multiple caves to reduce disputes. Furthermore, a tank with ample hiding spots, like rockwork and driftwood, supports their shy, nocturnal nature and encourages natural behaviour.

Feeding and Nutrition

As omnivores with a protein preference, these fish thrive on a varied diet to maintain their vibrant patterns. For example, offer high-quality sinking pellets or algae wafers as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or blackworms. Moreover, include fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber for balance. Feed sparingly once daily, preferably at night, to align with their nocturnal habits and prevent water fouling.

Breeding Orange Peckoltia Pleco Catfish

Breeding this species is achievable in an 80-litre tank with multiple caves or slate niches for spawning. Maintain water at 25–29°C and a pH of 6.5–7.0 with high oxygenation to encourage spawning. Males, with broader heads and more odontodes, guard eggs in caves, which hatch in 5–7 days. Consequently, fry should be fed infusoria or finely crushed foods, transitioning to baby brine shrimp as they grow. Remove adults post-hatching to protect fry.

Species Overview

The Orange Peckoltia Pleco Catfish is a vibrant, manageable fish that enhances aquariums with its bold black-on-yellow patterns and peaceful demeanour. Additionally, its small size (up to 8–15 cm) and minimal algae-eating habits make it suitable for intermediate aquarists. This species is prized for its striking appearance and scavenger role, consuming uneaten food rather than algae.
