Black Calvus - Altolamprologus
Altolamprologus calvus is a cichlid endemic to the southern shoreline of Lake Tanganyika in eastern Africa. The species has an extremely laterally compressed body and a high dorsal fin. Males may grow to 13 cm, while females are normally smaller. This species doesn’t get big fast.
Ideal Tank Setup
For optimal health, the Black Calvus Cichlid requires an aquarium between 60 and 100 liters, equipped with stable, hard water conditions. Recreate its natural rocky environment to promote well-being. Additionally, keep water temperatures steady to minimize stress. To accurately simulate its native habitat:
- Include plenty of rocks and caves for hiding.
- Use a sandy substrate to mimic Lake Tanganyika.
- Keep water hardness high (pH 7.8-9.0).
- Maintain temperatures between 24-28°C.
Compatible Tank Mates
- Other Tanganyikan cichlids of similar size.
- Julidochromis species.
- Synodontis catfish.
- Larger, non-aggressive species.
Diet and Feeding
The Black Calvus Cichlid is a natural predator of small crustaceans and fry in its native habitat. In captivity, it readily consumes frozen items such as mysis shrimp and bloodworms. Supplement its diet with high-quality flake foods or protein tablets. To ensure optimal health and preserve water quality, feed this species sparingly once or twice each day.
