Bitterlings are small freshwater fish belonging to the Acheilognathinae subfamily within the Cyprinidae family. They are known for their unique reproductive strategy where they lay their eggs inside freshwater mussels. The male bitterling develops bright colors, particularly during the breeding season, to attract females.
