The Coen River Trifasciata Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia trifasciata) is a stunning and colourful species of rainbowfish native to the clear waters of the Coen River in Northern Queensland, Australia. Known for its vibrant hues and peaceful nature, it is a popular choice for aquarists looking to add a unique and lively species to their tanks.

Appearance & Behavior

This species showcases a dazzling mix of colours, ranging from metallic blues to vibrant reds and oranges, with a distinctive black horizontal stripe running along its body. Males are more colourful, especially during breeding periods, while females have more muted colours. The Coen River trifasciata is an active swimmer and does best in groups of six or more, which enhances their schooling behaviour and colour display.

Tank Requirements

To mimic their natural environment, Coen River Rainbowfish thrive in tanks with clean, clear water and ample swimming space. Ideal conditions include:

·         pH: 5.8-8.0

·         Temperature: 22-28°C

·         Plenty of plants and open swimming areas

Good filtration and regular water changes are crucial to maintaining their vibrant colouration and health.

Diet

These rainbowfish are omnivorous and will thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, as well as plant matter. A varied diet ensures their colours remain vibrant and helps promote healthy growth.
