The Common Bristlenose Catfish (Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus) is a popular freshwater species valued for its efficient algae consumption and versatility. Smaller than some related species, it suits medium-sized aquariums well. Known for its distinctive bristles, robust health, and straightforward care needs, this peaceful fish is an excellent option for aquarists ranging from beginners to experts.

Ideal Tank Setup

A 100-litre tank or larger is recommended to provide enough space for this active bottom-dwelling fish. To create a comfortable and natural environment:

  • driftwood and caves
  • plants
  • Use soft sand or smooth gravel as substrate

Water Parameters

  • pH Range: 6.5–7.5
  • Temperature: 22–26°C
  • Filtration: Maintain excellent water quality with efficient filtration and regular water changes.

Compatible Tank Mates

Common Bristlenose Catfish is peaceful and does well in community tanks with similarly calm species. Great tank mates include:

  • Small tetras
  • Rasboras
  • Guppies
  • Corydoras catfish

Steer clear of housing these catfish alongside aggressive or territorial species like large cichlids, as this can cause stress or harm. Ideally, maintain them singly, in pairs, or small groups within tanks that provide plenty of hiding spots for optimal well-being.

Feeding

  • Algae wafers
  • Blanched vegetables such as cucumber, or spinach
  • Sinking pellets
