Endemic to Central Congo River Basin in Africa , the (Phenacogrammus interruptus) better known as the Congo Tetras are the most attractive Tetras in the hobby. A peaceful and popular schooling fish to own , what’s makes them attractive in the aquarium is due to their appealing rainbow luminescence body.

Tank Setup

Congo tetras thrive in a 120-liter tank with soft, slightly acidic water. Maintain a pH of 6.0–7.5 and temperatures of 23°C–27°C. Add dense plants and open swimming areas. Additionally, use dim lighting and strong filtration. Consequently, this setup mimics their natural habitat, promoting health and vivid colors.

Ideal Tank Mates for Congo Tetra

Congo tetras flourish in schools of 6–8 with peaceful fish like rainbowfish or Corydoras. Avoid fin-nippers or aggressive species to prevent stress. Ensure tank mates tolerate similar water conditions. For instance, mid-level dwellers reduce competition. Thus, a balanced community fosters harmony, letting these tetras swim freely.

Diet and Feeding

Congo tetras eagerly eat omnivorous diets. Offer high-quality flakes or pellets, plus live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Include spirulina for greens. Feed small portions 2–3 times daily. Besides, varied meals boost their shimmer. This diet keeps them active and healthy.

Breeding of Congo Tetra

Breeding Congo tetras requires a separate tank with soft, acidic water and plants. Keep water at 24°C–26°C for spawning. Females scatter eggs among plants. As a result, remove adults post-spawning to protect eggs. Fry need tiny foods like infusoria. This setup ensures healthy fry growth.
