Electric Blue Cichlids (Sciaenochromis fryeri), also known as Electric Blue Hap, is type of cichids that is native to Lake MalawiAs their name suggests, Electric Blue Cichlids have bright blue coloring and tend to have blue stripes of different hues. Electric Blue Cichlids can grow pretty large, upwards of 8 inches. They also are a somewhat aggressive species.

Tank Size

Electric Blue Sciaenochromis fryeri cichlids need at least a 200-liter tank for one fish, with larger tanks advisable for groups or community setups. They prefer water temperatures between 24°C and 28°C and a pH of 7.8 to 8.6, replicating Lake Malawi’s environment. Ensure ample open swimming areas complemented by rocky formations and caves to support their natural territorial instincts.

Tank Mates

Electric Blue Cichlids are moderately peaceful compared to other African cichlids but males may display territorial behaviour. Suitable companions include other Haps, Peacocks, and larger, non-aggressive Mbuna species. It is best to avoid highly aggressive cichlids or small, shy fish that may experience stress. Maintaining a proper ratio of one male to three to four females helps minimize aggression within groups.

Feeding

As carnivorous fish, Electric Blue Sciaenochromis fryeri require a diet rich in protein. Provide high-quality cichlid pellets or sticks designed for carnivores as their primary food source. Enhance their coloration by supplementing with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, krill, or bloodworms. To maintain their health and vibrant blue coloration, avoid overfeeding and limit fatty food intake.
