Aquasonic Bactonex is an Australian-made, broad-spectrum antiseptic water treatment designed to prevent and treat bacterial, fungal, and protozoal infections in both freshwater and marine aquarium fish. Formulated with the active constituents aminacrine hydrochloride (1.66 mg/mL) and methylene blue (0.025 mg/mL), it serves as an all-in-one remedy for common aquatic ailments while acting as an excellent prophylactic during transitions.
What It Treats
Bactonex targets a wide array of common external pathogens, making it highly effective against:
- Bacterial Infections: Fin rot, tail rot, mouth fungus (columnaris), and body ulcers.
- Protozoal Parasites: White spot (Ich), Velvet, Chilodonella, Trichodina, and Trichodinella.
- Fungal Infections: Fungal growths on the body or eyes.
When & How to Use It
- Indications: Use it during routine water changes, when introducing new fish, within quarantine systems, or if fish show listlessness and a loss of appetite.
- Dosage Rate: Add 10 mL per 40 Litres of aquarium water. If necessary, you can repeat the dose after 5 days.
- Filtration Adjustment: You must remove activated carbon from your filtration system during treatment, as carbon will absorb and neutralize the medication. If using sub-gravel filters, slow down the flow rate.
- Oxygenation: Ensure the aquarium is well aerated throughout the treatment period.
Critical Safety Precautions
- Invertebrate Risk: Bactonex is not reef-safe. It can severely harm corals, anemones, and invertebrates. Blue color morphs and sea urchins are explicitly noted to be adversely affected.
- Staining: The formula contains dye (methylene blue) which will heavily stain silicone, ornaments, and fabric if spilled.
- Consumption Restriction: It is strictly forbidden for use on any fish intended for human consumption.
