The African butterfly fish (Pantodon buchholzi) is a unique and fascinating species native to freshwater habitats in West and Central Africa, particularly in slow-moving rivers, swamps, and floodplains.

Ideal Tank Mates

The African Butterfly Fish typically exhibits a peaceful temperament but may prey on smaller fish due to its hunting instincts. It cohabits effectively with mid- and bottom-dwelling species such as Congo tetras, elephant nose fish, catfish, and medium-sized West African cichlids. Avoid housing them with top-dwelling fish or fin-nippers, which can cause stress. Providing a roomy aquarium helps minimize aggressive behaviors, promoting a balanced and calm habitat.

Feeding and Nutrition

African Butterfly Fish are carnivorous and thrive on a protein-rich diet primarily consisting of surface foods. Recommended options include live insects such as flies, small crickets, and mosquito larvae, complemented by frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, or sizeable flake foods. They seldom consume sinking food, so it is best to feed them at the water’s surface during dawn or dusk, aligning with their natural hunting behavior and promoting optimal water conditions.

Species Overview

The African Butterfly Fish stands out as a distinctive surface inhabitant, perfectly suited for community tanks housing mid- and bottom-level species. Its elegant butterfly-shaped fins, ability to breathe air, and predatory nature offer a captivating experience for experienced aquarists.
