The Bolivian ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus) have many common names: butterfly ram, Bolivian butterfly cichlid, and ruby cichlid. This is a peaceful and colourful fish. This fish always stay in the middle and lower parts of the tank. It is easy to keep and perfect for your aquarium.

It is a species of fish endemic to the Amazon River basin in Brazil and Bolivia. The species is part of the family Cichlidae and subfamily Geophaginae. It is a popular aquarium fish, traded under the common names Bolivian butterfly, Bolivian ram, and ruby crown cichlid.

Tank Setup for Bolivian Butterfly Cichlids

A minimum tank size of 100 liters is advised for housing Bolivian Butterfly Cichlids comfortably. Replicate their natural habitat by using sandy substrates, driftwood, and live plants to provide hiding places and promote instinctive behaviours. These cichlids require a balance between ample open swimming areas and adequate cover. Maintain water temperatures between 24°C and 28°C, with a stable pH ranging from 6.5 to 7.5. Consistent water changes are crucial to preserving optimal water conditions.

Diet and Feeding

Maintaining a diverse diet is essential for the health and vitality of Bolivian Rams. Their primary nutrition should come from premium cichlid pellets or flakes, complemented by live or frozen protein-rich foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia. Including blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach further enriches their diet. A well-rounded feeding plan helps preserve their vibrant coloration and supports sustained energy.
