The Five Banded Barb (Desmopuntius pentazona johorensis) is very peaceful and it is more suitable than tiger barbs for the fresh water community tanks. It is best to keep them in group of 6 or more, they can become more aggressive when they alone or in small groups.

Size and Lifespan

These barbs grow to about 5 cm. With proper care, they live 4–6 years. Therefore, maintain pristine water and a varied diet to ensure longevity. Additionally, keeping them in groups of six or more promotes natural schooling, boosting their health and vibrant coloration.

Ideal Tank Setup

A 40-litre tank suits Five Banded Barbs, with dense plants and a dark substrate. Gentle water flow and efficient filtration are key. Furthermore, keep pH between 6.5–7.0 and temperature at 26–28°C. To replicate their natural habitat:

  • Add low-light plants like Java Fern or Anubias.
  • Use dark substrate for optimal coloration.
  • Ensure stable water with weekly changes.

Compatible Tank Mates

These peaceful barbs thrive in groups, enhancing tank harmony. They pair well with small, non-aggressive species. However, avoid dwarf shrimp, as they may prey on fry. Suitable tank mates include:

  • Neon Tetras
  • White Cloud Mountain Minnows
  • Kuhli Loaches
  • Celestial Pearl Danios

Diet and Feeding

Five Banded Barbs enjoy a varied omnivorous diet. Offer high-quality flakes or pellets daily. Additionally, provide live or frozen foods like Artemia or bloodworms. Supplement with finely chopped vegetables for health. Consequently, feed small amounts twice daily to maintain their vivid stripes and energy.

Breeding and Behaviour of Five Banded Barb

Breeding these barbs is achievable in a separate tank. Males display vibrant colors to attract females. Provide fine-leaved plants for egg-laying. After spawning, remove adults to protect eggs. Fry hatch in 24–36 hours, feeding on infusoria initially. Moreover, their schooling behavior adds lively charm to nano tanks.
